  7.                 Features of Ami-FileSafe
  8.                 ========================

  11.  - AFS has much faster disk access than FFS.
  12.  
  13.  - AFS will store (On average) more data than  FFS on the same disk.
  14.  
  15.  - AFS gives vastly improved directory scanning.
  16.  
  17.  - AFS is SAFE - If you crash your machine whilst writing Ami-FileSafe
  18.            partitions will not (unlike OFS & FFS) become invalidated
  19.            or corrupt.

  22.                     Restrictions and requirements
  23.                     =============================
  24.  
  25.     The demonstration version of Ami-FileSafe will not handle partitions of
  26. more than 10MB.  It can be installed and automouted in the RidgidBootBlock.
  27. Standard  mountlists are also supported.  Autobooting is supported.  Memory
  28. usage depends on the number of buffers selected.
  29.  
  30. The   full   version   of  Ami-FileSafe  is  available  from  Fourth  Level
  31. Developments (See the end of this file for details).

  33.                           Warning to Hackers
  34.                           ==================
  35.  
  36. This  version  of AFS does not contain the code to handle large partitions.
  37. If you try to remove the 10MB limit AFS will seem to work but the partition
  38. will become unstable and you _will_ lose your data. Do not  risk it, if you
  39. want to use AFS then buy the full version.
  40.

  42.                         Preparing installation
  43.                         ======================
  44.  
  45.     Select  or  make  a  suitable  partition.  All the data in the selected
  46. partition  will be destroyed when installing Ami-FileSafe, so make sure you
  47. make  a  backup.  Ami-FileSafe must be installed in the l:  directory.  You
  48. can  do  this  by  double clicking on the Install or Install020 (For 68020+
  49. machines) icon.

  52.                 Installing Ami-FileSafe on the partition
  53.                 ========================================
  54.  
  55.  
  56.     Now  you  can install Ami-FileSafe on the RidgidDiskBlock.  You can use
  57. Commodore's  HDToolbox,  which is supplied with the Workbench software, for
  58. this  purpose.   With the same tool you can install AFS on a partition.  We
  59. assume  here  that  you  will  use  HDToolbox.  If you use another tool you
  60. should refer to its documentation.
  61.  
  62.     Select  'advanced options' in the the partitioning window.  A number of
  63. extra  buttons  appear.   Click  on 'add/update...' and then click 'Add New
  64. File System...'.   Type in 'L:HardDiskAFS' for the name of the file system.
  65.  
  66.     Set  the  dostype field to '0x41465301' and then select ok.  Go back to
  67. the  partitioning  window,  select  the  desired  partition  and select the
  68. 'change...'  button.   Select the just added Ami-FileSafe (AFS\1).  Use all
  69. the default options:  automount on, block size 512, 2 reservered blocks.
  70.  
  71.     If  you  are  using  an  older  version  of  HDToolBox and the is not a
  72. 'change'   button  then  click  on  'Custom  File  System'  and  then  type
  73. '0x41465301' into the dostype field.
  74.  
  75.     Change  the  'buffers' field to a value between 50-200 depending on how
  76. much memory you have free (1 Buffer = 1K).
  77.  
  78.     If you are using an IDE drive then set the maxtransfer value to 0x1ffff
  79.  
  80.     Now  select  ok and the partioning menu will appear again.  Fill in the
  81. name you want the device to have in the 'Partition Device Name' field, e.g.
  82. 'DH1'.   If you want to boot from the disk you have to set the the bootable
  83. flag.  Go back to the main screen and save the changes.
  84.  
  85.     If HDToolBox reports that there is not enough space in the RDB then you
  86. can either:
  87.  
  88.     a) Get  a program called RDBPrep (aminet: disk/misc/rdp391.lha) and use
  89. that instead.
  90.  
  91.     b) Install  Ami-FileSafe  using mountlists (See the AmigaDos manual for
  92. details).
  93.  
  94.     Ami-FileSafe  should  be  installed  on  the partition now.  Reboot and
  95. format the partition from workbench.  If you have done something wrong then
  96. go back and start again.
  97.  
  98.                                Un-delete
  99.                                =========
  100.  
  101. AFS  now  includes  an  un-delete  feature.   Located  off  the  root  is a
  102. subdirectory  called  ".deldir".   It stores the last 31 deleted files.  To
  103. list the currently valid deleted files (from cli) type:
  104.  
  105. list :.deldir
  106.  
  107. You will notice the filenames have a number called a "slot number" appended
  108. after them to prevent duplicate file names.
  109.  
  110. To undelete a file simply copy it from the .deldir onto another drive e.g:-
  111.  
  112. copy :.deldir/NewsBatch@022 ram:
  113.  
  114. Will un-delete the NewBatch@022 file and store it in ram disk.
  115.  
  116. N.B.   While it is possible to un-delete files onto the same volume, if you
  117. do this you may overwrite the file you are trying to un-delete.

  121.                              Misc Notes
  122.                              ==========
  123.  
  124. - Do not try to use Gigamem/VMM swap _files_ on an AFS partition. 
  125.  
  126. - If you are using a cache program disable write cache for any AFS
  127.   partitions.

  132.                        Differences with FFS/OFS
  133.                        ========================
  134.  
  135.     When  you  use the c:list command the 'blocks used' information will be
  136. too  high.   The  list  command assumes every file consumes a block of free
  137. space  to  use  as  headerblock.   AFS  uses  blocks much more efficiently.
  138. Usually the real number of blocks used is the given amount minus the number
  139. of  files  listed.   You can check this with the "info" command, which will
  140. report the correct amount.
  141.  
  142.     Directory  tools  like  Directory Opus have the same problem with their
  143. spaceleft  figure  during a copy session.  You'll notice that after copying
  144. is finished the figure will go up to the correct figure.
  145.  
  146.     This  means  that  an  AFS  disk  stores  more  data  than an FFS disk.
  147. Ami-FileSafe uses a larger proportion of blocks for data storage.
  148.  
  149.     There  is  a  feature of AFS which tells programs asking the filesystem
  150. information about a Ami-FileSafe disk that it is an FFS disk.  This is done
  151. to  prevent  those  programs from saying it's not a dos disk without giving
  152. the information requested to the user (e.g.  the "info" command).

  155.                         AmigaDos compatibility
  156.                         ======================
  157.  
  158.     All  Amiga-Dos  features  are  implemented  and  you shouldn't have any
  159. problems  with  OS-Legal  programs.   Some  programs such as games and disk
  160. utilities which are not OS-legal will not work with Ami-FileSafe.
  161.  
  162. N.B. If  you  use Directory Opus 4 then we suggest you disable the progress
  163. indicator to speed up file operations.
